Give me 5 minutes, I’ll Share With You The Truth About Why Courage Is Important In Your Life

Have you ever considered how important courage is to living a joyful and purposeful life? Like really considered?

First thing you need to know is that courage is NOT bravery. Its one of those words whose meaning has changed in today’s society. Kinda like when my brother says ‘Fully Sick’ but what he actually means is ‘Awesome’.

Once I understood the definition of the word Brave, it began to form a mental picture in my mind. One of a knight in his shining silver armour, chest sticking out, while carelessly waving his sword around and boasting to the other knights about how he ‘will defeat all his enemies in a single blow.’ He is ACTING brave or as the Merriam-Webster dictionary states: showing strength to face danger. He is, for all intents and purposes, PRETENDING to be strong before any danger has indeed taken place. No one can say for sure whether his words hold truth or whether, on the eve of battle, he would turn tail and run away. In the moment of his boasting, you can only make assumptions.

This is why when you trace back the origins of the word brave to its source name, Bravado, the truth of the word begins to take shape. It’s a falsity, a mask we wear to hide the truth. Even the word bravery means: a showy display.

And this is how I have seen bravery play out in my interviews for the #courage1000project, and, if I am honest, how I too acted in my younger years to hide my fear. Brave becomes a mask we put on to hide our emotions about the actions that might need to be taken. It is a lie to cover up our fear of what is to come and is usually accompanied by a very loud outward display of ‘look at how great and brave I am!’

So what’s the difference then between brave and courage? And why does it really matter?

There are two huge differences between the two.

  1. Where brave is a pretense, courage is the truth.
  2. Bravery is displayed BEFORE a difficulty, where courage is shown DURING difficulty.

Courage is the actual act of displaying strength to withstand fear or difficulty. It is the doing and not just the saying. And THIS is why it is so important.

When we understand these two meanings we then have the self-awareness to call ourselves out on our own behaviours and make the choice to move from Brave to Courageous.

To put this into context, let me share one of my own moments.

In June 2019, after a very long spiritual, emotional and physical transformation, my entire business had pivoted in a huge and very unusual way. I was stepping back from my skills as a videographer and was embracing my calling… part of which included Intuitively Guided Tarot Reading. Not an easy transition to explain to my existing clients!

Finally after many days of agonising over it, I decided to take the plunge and went live on my business page explaining what had happened. Halfway through I found myself getting louder, talking quicker and trying to justify what was happening. In that moment, the word ‘brave’ flashed before my eyes and I realised what I was doing. I was being showy to hide the fear of how my news would be accepted. I was being showy to hide the fear that even I felt a little uncertain about my new direction. I was scared.

It was then I knew I had a choice. I could continue to be brave and showy and try to hide my fear (which never works by the way. Others can see that you are hiding something very clearly.) Or I could take a deep breath, step out of bravery and be courageous instead.

“You know what guys?” I said in the middle of my Live, “The truth is… I am really nervous about announcing this. I have no idea if this is going to work as a business or if you are even going to accept me in this space. It feels so different to what I have been doing and I am quite scared about the whole thing right now. But I just have to do it.”

And do you know what happened?

The support I got from my community was overwhelmingly positive and I even got some insight from them that what I was doing was not so different to what I had been doing all those years as a videographer anyway. Turns out my community and clients loved me for so much more than my camera work.

In that moment, my fears vanished and I realised there was no need for me to be brave. But it took me that moment of uncomfortableness and calling myself out on that action in order to move into a place of courage.

THIS is why courage is so important in order to live a joyful and purposeful life.

Courage = truth.
