Is it just me or are the people who are trying to sell to you from the middle aisle of a shopping centre the most obnoxious salespeople ever?

I was on my way to Kmart the other day with my daughter and we passed one of those centre booths doing kids photos.

‘Your daughter is beautiful. You need to get photos of her done today and it wont cost you anything.’

‘Thank-you but we’re all good.’

She proceeded to step in my way to stop me from passing.

‘It wont cost you anything. Its a one day special and you get all these benefits.’

‘No thank-you. We’re not interested.’

‘why wouldn’t you be interested in such an amazing offer? You could take this and this home with you today and then….’

As you could imagine, i was losing my patience.

‘I said no thank-you. I’m a photographer, I dont need you to take pictures of my daugter when i can do it myself.’

Now you think that would have stopped her yes? Nope.

‘Your a photographer? Do you shoot natural light or studios? Do you have your own studio or do you work from home? Im sure you can’t do what we do right here.’

Ok so after stealing my time she was now putting me down. Look i’m a pretty polite person but by now… id had enough.

‘Actually I have a very successful home studio, it has financially supported my family for the past 5 years and I have over 200 amazingly loyal clients who’ve i’ve gotten without ever having to resort to harassing them to buy from me. Any other questions?’

I didn’t wait for an answer. My daughter and i pushed past her and left.

Here’s the thing, this happened over 3 years and to this day, i still remember that conversation, the women, the business all because of how she made me feel!

Everytime I see ANY of those sales booths at the shops, I give them a wide birth and avoid them like the plague.

Why am I sharing this story? Because your online marketing efforts are exactly the same.

Look you can jump in front of the camera and sell until your heart is content… but really you’re just bashing your potential prospects over the head trying to force them to buy your stuff. At some point they are going to be smart enough to avoid your attempts and will possibly avoid you in the future too.

You may aswell take up a job in the shopping centres jumping in peoples way and forcing them to listen to your pitches regardless of what they say.

Now that type of business…. Nobody wants to be a part of that… There is a better way.

There’s Storytelling.

I want to create a movement of businesses who aren’t so focussed on clobbering their prospects but are much more focused instead of connecting with them.

Connection is the heart of relationships….of loyalty… of trust.

Story is the heart of connection.

And stories… well they can only come from the heart.
