You Should Experience The Difference Between Happiness & Joy At Least Once In Your Life And Here’s Why

When you think of happiness, what picture comes to mind?

Do you see a young child holding a huge ice-cream cone and as it drips down their hands, they lick it up eagerly with a huge smile on their face?

What about joy? What picture comes to mind? The same one? Feeling a bit confused? I honestly don’t blame you!

For the longest time I thought the two were pretty similar because growing up I was taught happy was good and joy was just the next level of happiness. I think its just the easiest way to explain to children the difference.

But the more I dove into my own personal and spiritual growth, I quickly realised these two were very different things. Let me explain.

Happy is sitting on my back verandah watching the clouds roll across the sky in the peace and quiet. But joy? Joy is feeling the soft breeze caress my skin while noticing the clouds look like waves rolling across the sky in an upside down ocean void of water. Joy is noticing the smell of roses and rosemary blending together as they waft up from my garden. Joy is listening to the garbled melody of the Magpie sitting in a tree nearby, the rustle of a lizard in the garden bed and the occasional buzz of an insect flying around.

Joy is noticing all of these things and feeling my connection to them from deep within me.

Happy is when my daughter gives me a hug. But joy? Joy is when she squeezes me a little bit tighter and holds just that little bit longer before whispering in my ear ‘I love you Mummy.’ Joy is smelling the sweet scent of her hair and feeling the softness of her skin in that embrace and knowing that the tears welling in the corner of my eyes are filled with pure unconditional love.

Joy is noticing all of these things and feeling my connection to her from deep within me.

Happy is when I am dancing and singing to my favourite music. But joy? Joy is losing myself in the music as my bare feet slide across the evening grass under the rising full moon. Joy is feeling the cooling breeze against my skin as my hips twist and turn to the beat of the music. Joy is feeling my feminine nature free to express, create and move as the words flow from my throat.

Joy is noticing all of these things and feeling the connection I have with myself from deep within me.

Happy may bring a smile to your face and may make you feel good but joy is the experiential feeling that comes after happiness. It is quiet and deeply internal. Joy fills you up from the inside out and makes your heart expand out into the world. It cannot be contained.

So why is it so very important to feel joy at least once in your life?

At that very peak of your joy, that moment when you truly feel your heart expanding out into the world and that deep connection to everything around you…

THAT is your natural state.
THAT is who you were before life beat you down.
THAT is who you truly are inside.

And when you’ve experienced joy like this, even if it is the tiniest of glimpses, you realise you will do whatever it takes on your personal growth journey to reclaim your natural state permanently.

You will do whatever it takes to reclaim your life.
